Dehradun History
Once a part of the Garhwal Himalayan region, Dehradun was earlier called Kedar Khand according to Skanda Purana. Katyuris of Garhwal were the early rulers of this region. Till the British came, it was also ruled by the Gorkhas of Nepal for about two decades till 1815. In the battle of Nalapani between the Gorkhas lost to the British. A treaty was signed in 1816 known in history as the Treaty of Sugauli. The treaty allowed the British to establish their complete authority over the entire region of Garhwal and Kumaon which included Dehradun as well.
During the period of the Mauryas, history has recorded the fact that the great Mauryan Empire Ashoka also ruled over this region till the end of 3rd century B.C.If the records are to be believed, the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen-Tsang also visited this place.In 1903,led by Amar Singh Thapa, the Gorkhas once again conquered Doon, defeating Sudarshan Shah of Tehri. |
